We got up really early and set off for North Norfolk, there had been a bad frost in Felixstowe and we had to clear the screen of ice :( but we saw a nice sunrise on the way :). We had seen an article on the local news at the beginning of the week about grey seals coming to Horsey beach to have their pups and thought we would go and have a look. Horsey is about 12 miles north of Gt. Yarmouth and it took us about 2 hours to get there. We had to wrap up warm because it is cold today and despite the weather forecast being good it was drizzling when we first got there! We didn’t have to walk far from the car park at Horsey Gap before getting to the rope at the edge of the dunes and seeing the whole beach with literally hundreds of grey seals and pups! There were males and females – sometimes having a right old go at each other. The males were more aggressive but the females got a bit stroppy if another female got too close to her pup. The pups are so,oooo gorgeous, ranging in colour from yellow when first born and then gradually getting lighter in colour. Some of them still had the cord attached! Beautiful eyes quite a sight and not something you can see anywhere else in the country so easily I would say. We walked a long way along the dunes and got really close to some of them but the whole beach was covered with seals and the blackboard said 580 pups had been counted today! We had our lunch in the car park and then drove to Horsey mill which is a beautifully restored windmill and parked there for a really nice but very long and muddy walk to the mere, another derelict mill, the thatched church and back to the car park. Saw 1000s of geese flying over and a marsh harrier and a Great Egret :) Had a cuppa and a cake then went to Potter Heigham to watch the sunset.
